Biodiversity in the Boardroom

Biodiversity in the Boardroom Nisha.Shouan@middlemarch.eco 5 December 2025

In an era of rising disclosure obligations and intensifying stakeholder scrutiny, businesses must move beyond carbon to address their impact and dependencies on nature. But nature is complex and questions like how do you measure, report, and improve in a credible way are becoming increasingly important.

Middlemarch has partnered with JS Global Advisory, a specialist sustainability consultant, to help answer those questions. Together, we’re bringing deep ecological expertise and board-level sustainability strategy to help businesses navigate the growing challenges and opportunities linked to biodiversity and nature-related risk.

Many organisations struggle to take meaningful action. Unlike carbon, nature is not easily quantified and the science is complex, with multiple variables and strong spatial dependencies. For many, a lack of experience or the fear of “getting it wrong” leads to inaction. Too often, biodiversity and sustainability efforts operate in silos without an integrated, end-to-end approach that connects data, strategy, and delivery.

The rising cost of inaction

The cost of inaction on biodiversity is rising fast. Research shows that only around 20% of organisations have assessed their biodiversity impacts within their operations, and just 16% have done so across their supply chains. With increasing regulation such as the CSRD, TNFD, and biodiversity net gain mandates, businesses will soon be held accountable for how they manage and disclose their impacts on nature.

Taking action on biodiversity is no longer optional. It’s essential for long-term resilience, compliance, and reputation.

What We Offer
Our partnership brings together two distinct but complementary areas of expertise by combining ecological science with sustainability strategy to give organisations the clarity, confidence, and capability to act on biodiversity.

  • Ecological baseline and assessment – Strong experience in habitat surveys, spatial analysis, species modelling.
  • Biodiversity metrics, dependencies and impacts – Advanced metric design and natural capital accounts.
  • Governance and strategy – Strategic environmental, social, and governance (ESG) and sustainability advice and scenario planning.
  • Reporting and disclosure – Alignment of frameworks with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD).
  • Implementation and delivery – field delivery and habitat enhancement combined with programme oversight, governance and stakeholder alignment.
  • Assurance and credibility – Peer review, assurance and integration with financial and risk functions.

Our four step approach

To help organisations move from ambition to credible action, we follow a structured four-step framework that brings clarity and confidence to every stage of the journey. Every business is at different stages on their sustainability journey, so we tailor this framework to your needs and our team will work with you to identify and prioritise the risks and opportunities facing your business.

Our method ensures biodiversity is embedded in business decision-making. It provides the scientific rigour, governance insight, and practical implementation support needed to create measurable, meaningful nature-positive outcomes, to help you:

  • Meet and exceed regulatory and investor expectations.
  • Reduce risk of delays, reputational damage, or litigation.
  • Unlock strategic value in nature, e.g., in green credentials, finance, owner expectations.
  • Align biodiversity strategy with corporate, operational and ESG goals.
  • Access credible, defensible nature metrics and implementation.
